Optimize
your Web site
Make
your site appeal to search engines
1.
Keywords:
Decide what the main keywords for your site are. You should
think up about ten that accurately reflect the content
of your site, you can also include phrases.
Try to be as specific as possible. For example, if you
had a site about adventure tourism in Canada, you might
use:
"adventure, wilderness, eco-tourism, adventure tour,
Canada, out doors, hiking, camping, nature"
2. Description:
You will also need to come up with a short description
of what your page is about. It should just be a short
paragraph, less than a thousand characters.
eg. "Adventure tours in Western Canada. Safe fun
adventures in the wilderness. We offer ocean kayaking,
hiking and fishing. Fly in to pristine wilderness environments"
3. Title:
Your page needs a title that should include as many ofyour
keywords as you can fit, WITHOUT making it look too noticeable,
or you might turn off the visitors to your website.
For our imaginary tour company the title may be "Explore
WestCoast. Canadian wilderness adventures."
Keep it short; you need to make sure it fits into people'sbrowser
windows
You also want to use your keywords as many times as you
can in your description and title. It helps you to get
listed higher on the search engines. Notice how in the
above example I managed to use the words "adventure"
and "tour" and "wilderness" as many
times as I could, without making it look like bad copy.
4. Incorporate into Meta tagsA Meta Tag is simply
a piece of code that you put in the top of your site.
It is invisible to normal visitors. However, the search
engines see it, and it helps get you a better listing.
If you do it right
<META name="description" content="Adventure
tours in Western Canada. Safe fun adventures in the wilderness.
We offer ocean kayaking, hiking and fishing. Fly in to pristine
wilderness environments">
<META name="keywords" content="adventure,
wilderness, eco-tourism, adventure tour, Canada, out doors,
hiking, camping, nature">
.The title code looks like this
<title>Explore WestCoast. Canadian wilderness adventures.</title>
Now all you need to do is copy the above code, and insert
your own keywords, description and title into it!
Once you have created your Meta Tags, you need to insert
them into your site. They go between the </TITLE>
tag and the </HEAD> tag.
